It is the knowledge inside that things don’t last forever
No matter how much you want them to
Or maybe you don’t really want them to
But you are really enjoying them right now
And by “them” and by “things”,
You really mean people.
Because you realize that the people that you love won’t be around forever
Or that maybe they’ll just be far away
And it is okay,
And you don’t even really think about it that much,
And it doesn’t even make you that sad because you know you will see them
But sometimes,
When you least expect it,
You feel something in your gut.
Something that makes you unable to speak for just a little bit.
Maybe even just a few seconds.
And then you realize that this thing you feel,
This thing that is hurting your ribs,
It is called love.
And not mushy, gushy love,
But a love that is welling up from some other place.
A love that you couldn’t really create on your own.
This love might come and go.
Maybe it is a little sentimental,
Because sometimes you feel it for all people in all places.
But sometimes it is specific.
It is specific to certain voices and places and background noises.
Specific to certain rituals and routines and mundane activities.
You want to hold on forever,
But when you start thinking about that,
You have to stop,
Because you know you can’t.
You know that there are very few,
Maybe not even more than one thing,
That lasts forever.
And that one thing is love.
You are pretty certain it lasts forever,
Even if it makes you feel corny to say it out loud,
So you don’t.
but it is this knowledge that makes you feel okay.
This knowledge that love will prevail,
That love will last beyond the people that had it inside of them.
And this makes everything okay.
It really does.
Honest.
